Michoacán, Mexico – Lake Patzcuaro, a natural treasure located in the heart of Mexico and known for its vibrant Day of the Dead celebrations, is in a state of alarming environmental crisis. The combination of prolonged droughts, uncontrolled deforestation and rampant water theft has caused a drastic decline in the lake’s water levels, threatening its very existence. Signs of degradation are evident, with the island of Janitzio, once accessible only by boat, now almost within walking distance due to low water levels.

Authorities have implemented measures to combat this crisis, including the formation of a committee to protect and preserve the lake earlier this year. In addition, clean-up initiatives have been deployed and the fight against illegal water extraction has been intensified. These measures have prevented the theft of approximately 600,000 liters of water per day. However, many Patzcuaro residents remain pessimistic, believing that these measures came too late.

The local economy, which relies heavily on tourism, is in a state of uncertainty. Fishermen and merchants express concern about the safety of navigation and the potential impact on visitor numbers. Falling water levels have left docks dry, raising fears that navigation could be restricted, which would have devastating consequences for tourism and community livelihoods.

This story of Lake Patzcuaro is a grim reminder of the dangers of ecological neglect and the great risks to communities intrinsically linked to their natural environment. The reality now being experienced in Patzcuaro serves as a call to action for more timely and sustainable environmental management.
