Actor Tyrese Gibson is taking a stand against alleged racial discrimination by initiating legal action against Home Depot. Last Wednesday, Gibson filed a complaint in the Los Angeles Superior Court accusing the home improvement store of mistreatment and racial profiling stemming from an incident that took place at a West Hills, California store in February of this year.
Gibson claims that the cashier refused to accept her credit card as payment for her purchase, insisting that her companions identify themselves before she would allow them to make the purchase. When Gibson asked for the manager, the cashier refused to speak to her, and the manager claimed that it was store policy for all purchases to be made with an identification card or government-issued ID.
Gibson, as well as his two associates— Eric Mora and Manuel Hernandez— are seeking one million dollars in damages from Home Depot, based on the amount that Gibson has spent at the store over the years. The complaint also seeks statutory damages, attorneys’ fees, punitive damages, a declaratory judgment declaring that Home Depot’s actions violated the Unruh Civil Rights Act, pre- and post-judgment interest, and other possible relief.
In response to the incident, a Home Depot spokesperson said, “Diversity and respect for all people are fundamental to who we are, and we do not tolerate discrimination in any form. We value Mr. Gibson as a customer, and in the months after this happened, we communicated with him and his attorneys several times to address his concerns. We will continue to do so.”
For now, Gibson continues to press forward with the lawsuit, determined to hold Home Depot accountable for their alleged actions. His legal team is looking to make an example out of this situation in order to help promote justice and expose the realities of discrimination that still exist in today’s society.
