Andrés Manuel López Beltrán assumes leadership in Morena and vows to preserve his father’s legacy

Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, the second son of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has been elected as Secretary of Organization of the Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party.

During Morena’s VII National Congress, amidst the renewal of the party’s leadership, López Beltrán committed to upholding the political legacy of his father, who has confirmed his retirement from public life.

“For me, these are difficult times to interpret, because I am very pleased to begin my career here, where I have always belonged, but it greatly saddens me to do so at the same time that our greatest leader is stepping down,” López Beltrán declared before more than 3,000 congress attendees during the event held in Mexico City.

It should be noted that the new Secretary of Organization assumes this key role during a significant transition within the party, as President López Obrador, who founded Morena in 2012, has made it clear that he intends to retire from politics.

“He is retiring; he said he would step down when there was a generational change. And I want us all to understand that when we talk about a generational shift, we are referring to our elected president, our comrade Claudia Sheinbaum,” López Beltrán emphasized, referring to the future of political leadership in the country.

According to reports, López Beltrán’s responsibility as Secretary of Organization will include managing the party’s structures, coordinating Morena’s growth, and overseeing the selection of candidates for upcoming elections.

“Our task will be to preserve that legacy,” López Beltrán reiterated, referring to the significant impact the outgoing president has had on shaping and ensuring the party’s success.

At the same congress, the future leader of Morena, Luisa María Alcalde, also stressed the importance of confronting the challenges that come with the party’s rapid growth.

Meanwhile, President López Obrador took the opportunity to reaffirm his retirement from politics, urging party members to fully support Sheinbaum in her new role as president.

“Just as you supported me, I ask you to support our comrade Sheinbaum,” López Obrador concluded, making it clear that the success of his legacy will depend on the unity and support behind Morena’s new leadership.
