Bank of Ireland Technical Glitch Causes Chaos at ATMs Across Ireland

On Tuesday, customers of the Bank of Ireland (BoI) encountered a frustratingly familiar problem at ATMs across the country. The technical glitch allowed customers to withdraw up to €1,000 (US$1,090) without having the required funds in their accounts.

The bug caused long lines as customers vied to take advantage of the abnormal situation. Images and videos of the incident quickly spread on social media, leading to backlash from concerned customers and Irish police alike.

The bank has since warned customers that any money transferred and withdrawn as a result of the glitch ― even over regular limits ― will be deducted from their accounts.

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this outage caused; we know it fell far short of the standards our customers expect from us,” the bank said on social media Wednesday, adding that services had since resumed. Those who are now affected by a “bank overdraft” due to the glitch were encouraged to contact their bank managers to rectify their standing.

The exact cause of the technical failure is still unknown, however, the BoI has launched an investigation into the matter. Regulations and security standards are now under review to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.
