The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has confirmed the death of Craig Robertson, a 74-year-old Utah resident, during an attempt to serve him with an arrest warrant for making multiple “credible” threats to President Joe Biden and other government officials of the Democratic wing.
The incident occurred just a day before President Biden is scheduled to visit the state. Two FBI agents arrived at Robertson’s home in Utah to execute a search and arrest warrant against him for three felonies. Reports say Robertson was allegedly armed, which may have led to a shootout between the agents that ended in his death.
Federal prosecutors claimed Robertson posted messages online referring to a “presidential assassination or two” and that he was preparing a hunting suit and a M24 sniper rifle for Biden’s arrival in Utah. He also posted photos of firearms on his social media for all to see.
The FBI has opened an internal investigation to clarify the details of the event. This tragedy has become a subject of debate, as some of Robertson’s neighbors who knew him, have wondered if he was in fact a real threat or simply a frail old man. Reports say he was a self-proclaimed avid supporter of former President Donald Trump, and had expressed his anger online against several judicial actors involved in pending federal cases against the former president.
President Biden has been informed about the tragedy, though has not yet made any public statements on the matter.
The death of Craig Robertson has raised many questions on the power of the FBI in terms of their use of force, as well as the importance of taking credible threats of violence seriously. The tragedy, and its aftermath, will surely have implications on American policy and security processes going forward.
