On January 28th, a new case of femicide shook the city of Medellin, Colombia. A 19-year-old woman, Isabella Mesa, was found dead in a suitcase. The alleged killer is Sebastian Villegas, her boyfriend, a 21-year-old soldier.
Mesa, originally from Medellin but a resident of Mexico, was the mother of a 3-year-old child and had returned to her hometown to visit her partner, with whom she had been in a relationship since November of last year. Villegas was on leave from January 25 to February 2. According to authorities, Villegas had asked his mother for permission to let Isabella stay at home during his leave period. However, a few days after her arrival, the young woman was found dead in a room in the house.
It was Villegas’ mother who found the body and alerted the authorities. Villegas turned himself in and following the investigation, on Monday he was formally charged with the crime and could face a stiff sentence for femicide. Under Colombian law, femicide is an aggravated felony punishable by 20 to 40 years in prison.
As the investigation continues, Mesa’s family and friends are demanding justice for her and all women who have been victims of femicide.
