After the tragic terrorist attacks on Israel’s disputed settlements near Gaza, Hamas has effectively provoked a disproportionate response from the Israeli Defense Forces on Gaza. In both the Hamas attacks and Israel’s response, there will continue to be and have been civilian casualties. Among them, a Colombian woman alongside her partner who now leave a child orphaned.

Mexican Doctor Trapped

In Gaza, a Mexican doctor, a woman by the name of Barbara Daniela Lango working for Doctors Without Borders, is trapped in the southernmost area of the region. Her father continues to denounce the closure of the Egyptian border, likely due to Israeli pressure and mixed US signals. With most infrastructure shut down, Lango is in a difficult situation alongside her husband. Thankfully, Lango has maintained contact with Mexican diplomatic personnel who are operating in Gaza to both normalize and continue relations with the Palestinian people and to evacuate Mexicans in the area.

Lango’s father in comments to the Mexican financial press communicated that Lango via WhatsApp was able to confirm that the border to both Egypt and Israel remain closed. This disallows the creation of a humanitarian corridor for civilians who have nothing to do with the Israel-Hamas conflict.

In just 10 days, more than 2600 people have been killed in the Hamas-Israel conflict. The vast majority are civilians. The conflict continues to expand its scope as Benjamin Netanyahu refuses to allow foreigners safe passage. This means that Netanyahu is likely to accept the killing of additional non-combatants in order to find high value Hamas targets.
