The Latin American music community has been left in shock following the brutal murder of Mexican rapper Lefty SM, 31. Lefty SM, real name Juan Carlos Sauceda, was killed in an apparent home invasion in Jalisco, Mexico on Saturday evening.
Lefty SM was born in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, alongside the U.S.-Mexico border. He had early experience with the Mexican music genre of corridos and worked as a mechanic at his father’s workshop, all the while developing his skills in hip-hop and rap. The news of his death was initially announced by his record label, Alzada, through a statement. It is believed that Lefty SM was shot and killed during a robbery in his own home.
Just days before his death, Lefty SM had successfully re-released the single “Por mi México”, which had amassed nine million views on YouTube. The lyrics reflect the struggles of Mexican people, the pressure on young people growing up in impoverished communities and those who cross the U.S.-Mexico border in search of a better life. On August 3, Lefty SM also released a remix of “Ingrata” with the support of Latin American groups Cañaveral.
Tributes for Lefty SM have been pouring in from around the world. From fellow Latin American musicians to renowned rap stars, online tributes have come thick and fast for the talented Mexican artist.
The murder of Lefty SM is just the latest in a string of violent attacks on artists inMexico. Just weeks ago, Miguel Bosé and Mónica Pont both reported being victims of violent assaults in the country.
Lefty SM will be remembered for his often provocative yet affecting lyrical style, explorations of Mexican culture, and commitment to standing up for his community and others in similar situations.
