By Ricardo Lezama Currently, the city of San Bernardino is suffering from an unprecedented homelessness crisis. While the county government receives funds, local cities shoulder the burden of the littered streets and open air drug use, local first responders shoulder the consequences of letting individuals languish for so long. This video consists of some very common sights throughout the city of San Bernardino and the shocking statistics behind some of these homeless individuals. For instance, 1 in 2 individuals has been on the street for more than 1 year. Most are suffering from either an unchecked substance abuse addiction or a mental health illness. In many cases, they have both of these ailments and need help resocializing just to access rehabilitation and emergency care services.
The city of San Bernardino is in desperate need of a comprehensive plan to address the homelessness crisis. The city has already taken steps to provide temporary housing and other services, but the problem is far from solved. The city needs to invest in long-term solutions that will help individuals get back on their feet and become productive members of society. This includes providing access to mental health services, job training, and other resources that will help individuals become self-sufficient.
