Residents in the Cauca department of Colombia awoke to a bomb detonation, leaving two dead and two injured, on Wednesday, September 20.
The car bomb that exploded in the village of Timba had been aimed at the local police station. The station was left in ashes, and the hospital also received some damages. Police General Tito Castellanos confirmed the casualties and noted that police units Ho have faced new hostilities throughout the morning, requiring air support from the military forces.
Videos published by locals depict a scene of chaos and destruction, and the community members urged for help to attend to the emergency. The Army and the Police are currently patrolling the area belonging to the municipality of Buenos Aires, searching for those responsible for the attack. It is suspected that the attack was orchestrated by a FARC dissident group.
Residents in nearby towns had also suffered great alarm in the days before this incident. In San Rafael, a pedestrian bridge had been used to spread propaganda by FARC dissidents. San Pedro saw some houses plastered with posters of the same group, and Suarez experienced a military base being attacked with an explosive-laden vehicle.
The local authority of Cauca, Elías Larrahondo, has reported the bomb was left a short distance from the police station. The incident had caused a shockwave in the school and several commercial establishments of the area, leaving them in a state of shock.
The Military Forces are now determined to find the perpetrators of the attack and take appropriate measures for the security of the local population. This tragic event warns the nation of the potential of new escalated violence as a response to the government’s initiatives in the region.
