A Pac-Man Fight?

On Instagram, Manny Pacquiao’s lawyer recently teased a possible showdown between welterweights Mikey Garcia and Manny Pacquiao (62–7–2), but there have been multiple fight announcements surrounding “Pac-Man”. Ryan Garcia, Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. have all at one been rumored as possible opponents for the Filipino legend. None of these rumors have come to fruition, even getting dismissed openly by both promotors and the fighters themselves.

‘Tax Collector’ Depicts Power of Chicano Gangs, Mexican Culture Globally

Conejo Shows Perfect Fusion of Two Unique Mexican Cultures: LA and Jalisco

In a welcomed detour from the usual self-deprecating or otherwise emasculating depiction of Mexicans in Hollywood, the ‘Tax Collector’ marked its digital theatrical release yesterday, Friday August 7th, 2020. The movie directed by David Ayer, starring Bobby Soto, Cheyenne Hernandez, George Lopez, Shia LeBouf and Conejo ‘aka’ Jose Martin, depicts the trials and tribulations of Mexican Mafia set delegates whose job is to collect taxes from Los Angeles area gangs.

Bobby Soto Plays ‘Tax Collector’ For California Gang

Bobby Soto and Shia LeBouf play Chicano tax collectors in southern California. They collect the ‘dirty third’ necessary for all LA based Chicano gangs to pay to a prison organization, an obvious ode to the Mexican Mafia or ‘La Eme’, a Mexican nationalist gang started in the 1960’s to protect Mexicans from other ethnic groups within California’s prison system.

Since the start of the late 1980’s, it has been widely known that California based gangs often work in direct partnerships with powerful Mexican cartels handling drugs. The movie does a good job of sending that potent message to the audience with shootouts reflecting their subculture accurately.

The movie casts a light on Chicano culture in Los Angeles, California, with vivid depictions of life for Southsiders dealing with every day life to ‘Big Homies’ wielding power from within miserable conditions in California prisons. It’s as harrowing and cautionary as a movie of this type can be without preaching.

Shia LeBouf Plays An Assimilated White in Chicano Culture

Much of the United States is characterized with an increase in non-Whites assimilating to white culture. In California, the most Mexican place outside of official Mexico, the exact opposite occurs. Many kids grow up Chicano without knowig it, with LeBouf’s ‘Tax Collector’ character playing the role perfectly.

Many outside of California won’t understand this dynamic – Chicanos should feel right at home with the movie.

Mikey Garcia: Ready For Pacquiao, According To Man Who Knocked Pac-Man Out

Juan Manual Marquez, former welterweight, and the only man to have knocked out Manny Pacquiao during his hey-day is asserting that Mikey Garcia is the number one challenger for Pac-Man.

On February 29, Mikey Garcia faced down Jessie Vargas, a top contender whose speed and experience initially complicated Garcia’s gameplan. However, Garcia is a habitually slow starter, proving that he could time his 1-2 punch combination against a bigger, more experienced welterweight.

As the fight progressed, Mikey Garcia was able to break down through Jessie Vargas’ lead right hand and a propensity to gas out against the ropes.

Importance of Conserving Chicano Identity Recognized At UCLA: Los Tigres Del Norte Foundation

The UCLA Chicano Research Center has continued to preserve key aspects of Chicano culture. Creative efforts have leveraged resources from within the community to preserve identity and memory of Chicano culture. An interesting excerpt from an LA Times article here notes how a class based bifurcation occurs within the Chicano community, which is often exploited by conservative forces.

“The Mexican labels didn’t think poor people bought records,” Strachwitz says. “What the American labels understood, and still understand, is that poor Mexicans in the U.S. are strongly connected to their music and will spend all they have to buy it.”

Because it is so often associated with poor people and immigrants, much Mexican regional folk music, modern and historic, remains a source of ridicule for assimilated middle- and upper-class Latinos, including many in Los Angeles, according to Hernandez.

For that reason, he says, it is much more common to find assimilated and educated Chicanos dancing to Cuban son, Puerto Rican salsa or Spanish-language rock than to corridos or norteños–because the other genres are associated with middle- and upper-class values.

The article recalls when a UCLA researcher connected an effort to preserve a vast collection of Chicano music and paired it with the financing from superstars, los Tigres del Norte.

Scientology Rape Victim & Family Harassed

Recently, the husband of Chrissie Carnell Bixler (actor/model) took to social media to denounce harassment of their family from the Church of Scientology. Mrs Carnell Bixler is unfortunately one of the several (4 to our knowledge) that has accused Danny Masterson of rape. Masterson is an actor who has ties to the Church of Scientology.

Only Carnell-Bixler has gone public with her allegations, but these were (eventually) taken more seriously after much advocacy from her musician husband and public outrage (Source: Time).

The series of allegations were deemed serious enough for the actor to be dismissed from the Netflix show ‘The Ranch’ in 2017.

Pets Poisoned

On Instagram, Cedric Bixler Zavala (family man/singer for At The Drive In and Mars Volta) showed a piece of meat wrapped in a well known rat poison that his dog ingested. According to the singer, the meat was placed by someone linked to the Church of Scientology for the dog to find and eat. The practice is not uncommon as other COS related victims have claimed similar treatment from private investigators (Source: CBS). Even journalists have claimed retribution.

Pet Killed By Rat Poison

The poison was also found and documented by the singer.
