According to a Colombian federal prosecutor, Mario Burgos, Nicolas Petro is alleging that his father’s campaign “provided relevant information that the Prosecutor’s Office did not know” about “facts that he knows are of concern to the country.” Nicolas has publicly been shown to participate at some level with his fathers campaigns and political activities, with many other related allegations surfacing from cabinet members.
Nicolas may have received these funds from a donor by the name of Santander Lopesierra who alleged to be a drug trafficker by Colombian media. The total sum is somewhere near 30 million dollars in Colombian pesos: 1 billion COP. Other convicted criminals are alleged to have provided financing. In both using these funds and exceeding the legal limit, much of Petro’s administration would be invalidated due to a lack of transparency and illegality.
“In reality, some of said money entered their coffers and others to the 2022 presidential campaign in which our current president, Dr. Gustavo Petro Burgos, was elected,” said the prosecutor.
Right Wing Smear Against Left? Unlikely
Additionally, Gustavo Petro is Colombia’s first truly left-wing president, which could be the motivation the vitriol around his entire administration. However, that assertion seems less valid given the severity and apparent depth of the accusations emanating from Colombia’s top prosecutors’ office.
Even so, Nicolas Petro is alleged to have both funneled funds into his father’s campaign (there remains some doubt as to whether his father knew about their origin or existence within his operations) and laundered it for other purposes. Perhaps, as a reward for executing the plan, Petro’s son may have received an additional amount which he laundered alongside his ex-wife who is also being prosecuted.
Origin of Charges
Nicolas Petro’s situation unraveled after his ex-wife Daysuris Vasquez declared to the popular weekly magazine, Semana, that her ex-husband was involved in high-level corruption and money laundering. The declarations would specify that specific multi-million-dollar solicitations for funding were made by Nicholas Petro. Allegedly, this is one of the admissions that Nicolas has entered into the record against his own father.
