In Colombia, the first year of President Gustavo Petro’s tenure has been marked with constant cancellations of public events, late arrivals and ‘disappearances’ in international trips, raising questions about his agenda and ability to lead the country.
This Thursday, August 24, Petro cancelled a meeting with the Trade Council, adding to an alarming number of event cancellations in recent weeks. Last week he failed to attend the Andi Congress in Cartagena, and he also did not participate in an event on peace in the Bolivar capital.
The Casa de Nariño, the official residence of the Colombian President, informed that President Petro had arrived late in Bogotá from Ciénaga de Oro (Córdoba), allegedly due to his poor health.
This circumstance left the four governors of Valle del Cauca, Nariño, Cauca and Chocó, who made the trip to Bogotá to discuss public order in relationship to illegal armed organizations, without bilateral attention.
The governors were received at the headquarters of government by Defense Minister Ivan Velazquez, Interior Minister Luis Fernando Velasco, and other high officials of the national government.
Clara Luz Roldán Gonzalez, Governor of Valle del Cauca, said that “the security issue, which is of great concern to the four departments, was adequately answered, and we had the opportunity to learn about the strategies and how security issues are being addressed.”
But this constant pattern of cancellations, late arrivals and absences has led to worries about President Petro’s ability to lead Colombia.
It is still unclear why President Petro has been so reluctant to attend important public events and how it is affecting the political agenda. Only time will tell if this will have an impact on the future of the country.
