With Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, now facing indictment on three charges related to the purchase and possession of firearms, America is once again divided on the youngest son of the President.
The US Attorney for the District of Delaware David Weiss, appointed by US Attorney General Merrick Garland in mid-August, charged the 53-year-old Biden with lying to the seller of a handgun about not being an addictive user of stimulants narcotics or other controlled substances and possessing a firearm with knowledge it was illegal.
Though no official court date has been set yet, the Justice Department has declared that if convicted, Hunter Biden could face up to 25 years in prison.
While the Republican-led inquiry against Hunter Biden has been in motion since 2018 during President Donald Trump’s tenure, the Democratic party is accusing conservatives of using the investigation as a way to discredit the President and to cast doubts on his son’s foreign business dealings.
The Justice Department has maintained that the charges against Hunter Biden are “completely independent of anything that any political party or our president is doing.” But this hasn’t eased the tension amongst both sides. Those who choose to side with Trump have looked for any perceived benefit of his former rival in this indictment and vice versa. As result of the accusations, the American public is left feeling as divided as ever.
This case has heavy implications on the Biden family as well as all involved. As the case progresses, the implications of this legal battle may have far-reaching effects, not just for the generations before us, but for generations to come. Regardless of political views, the outcome of this situation could shape the future of politics in America for years to come.
