Jason Quigley delivered a Great Performance Unexpected By Berlanga Fans Despite Not Being A Natural Super Middleweight
The so-called “opponent” almost stole the show during DAZN’s Saturday showing in June 24. Jason Quigley’s showing in Madison Square Garden against the favored Matchroom boxer was surprising to many of Berlanga’s fans, but to me, personally, there was no shock in him outboxing him 7 rounds of the 12 rounder.
At the time of his victory, Berlanga’s expression showed that Quigley had done enough not to win the fight, but to command respect for his skill despite the power differential. Berlanga rated his performance a “C”, but Quigley gave the best account of himself possible. The fight’s difficulty wasn’t that Berlanga did poorly; Quigley genuinely found ways to evade Berlanga’s power with excellent upper body movement, dipping right, getting caught and dropped, but then dipping left and befuddling Berlanga for multiple rounds over and over again.
Quigley was knocked down several times during his bout with Berlanga, but part of it appeared to be the consequence of Quigley not being a career or long-time Super Middleweight. During one exchange, Quigley backed up and had to contend with the scoring consequences of a false knockdown. Mentally, this had to have weighed on him, but Quigley rallied and shook Berlanga during the counter in middle of the fight. This is a dangerous omen to the Berlanga camp. In our view, Quigley with one more super middleweight fight prior could have done a number on Berlanga.
