While yesterday, May 1st, 2024, was the date for the final press conference involving Canelo Alvarez’ team and Jaime Munguia, today was the weigh-in for the rest of the very exciting undercard.

Eimantas Stanionis

The Lithuanian WBA welterweight champion, Eimantas Stanionis, is set to fight Gabriel Maestre and defend his WBA regular belt. Stanionis was involved in a Vergil Ortiz bout that continued to get cancelled which effectively sidelined him for a year. Now, he has a chance to defend his belt and get back time and money expended for his various training camps.

However, Stanionis is up against the very game Gabriel Maestres, but there are a few signals that this is a gross mismatch. For one, Maestres is the victor in one controversial fight against another unknown welterweight. Nonetheless, Maestres is a two-time Venezuelan Olympian, but he was dropped by Mykal Fox and still the victor in a unanimous decision victory to obtain the WBA World Welterweight title. At 37, however, he doesn’t seem to have made much of a splash in professional boxing, but perhaps, his intention is to really pressure Stanionis precisely for that reason.

If you bet on Maestres, it would have to be for a KO win, but for Stanionis a cruise to a decision seems most likely. Right now, 5 dollars in Pennsylvania/New Jersey betting markets on Maestres gives you a return of 40 dollars should he win. The odds are lopsidedly in favor of the Lithuanian.
