Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is set to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) this week, where he plans to push for a regional aid plan to address the growing migration crisis in Latin America.
López Obrador has been vocal about the need for a comprehensive solution to the root causes of migration, which many Latin American countries, including Mexico, are facing. Despite efforts from these countries, the Mexican president noted that some governments around the world still rely on coercive measures, such as deportations and border militarization, to handle the issue.
“I want to continue insisting on the approval of a plan to help the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, which was, in its time, or something similar, to the Alliance for Progress that President John F. Kennedy set in motion,” AMLO stated at a press conference.
This comes at a time when the United States faces an influx of migrants seeking protection and economic opportunities.
As Mexico and the United States continue to maintain a strong economic and political relationship, it is essential for both countries to work together to find a solution to the migration crisis in Latin America. With AMLO and Biden’s meeting this week, there is hope for a renewed commitment to addressing the root causes of migration in the region, paving the way for a more sustainable and humane solution for all involved.
