Former world champ JoJo Diaz suffered the fifth defeat of his career in California. Jesus Antonio Perez whose record improved to 24-5 is a rugged Tijuana based veteran who pressured much of the fight.
The judges’ split decision was as follows:
Score Totals: 96-94 Perez, 95-94 Diaz, 99-90 Perez, which was quite extreme in some fan’s eyes.
During the fight, Diaz could be seen frustrated and even went as far as to shove his opponent. For this, the referee deducted a point and could have swung the fight in his favor in one of the judges’ cards.
JoJo Diaz headlined the main event for Golden Boy on Thursday night. It was somewhat eventful for the roughness during the fight. For example, there was quite a lot of ringside chaos as Jojo Diaz pushes Jesus Perez through the ropes. Ultimately, Diaz lost to an in-shape Ricky Perez who has boxed way above his optimal weight class. Perez was known for being defeated by Alexis Rocha, but the full-time construction worker was able to shrink down to what he feels is his optimal weight: 135 lightweights.
