The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) saw an historic milestone today with the announcement of the 2023 nominees. For the first time in the show’s three-decade-plue history, two of the biggest categories do not feature any male artists. Awards icons like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Nicki Minaj can all be seen competing in the ‘Artist of the Year’ category, while Latinas Shakira and Karol G make history as the only two Latinas to be nominated.
In 2022, Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny made history by becoming the first Latin artist to win artist of the year nomination. Shakira and Karol G also received nomination for their collaborative song “TQG” in the Best Collaboration and Best Latin Video categories. The news of Shakira and Karol G’s history-making nominations was met with celebration from fans of both singers, with many taking to social media to express their joy.
Shakira has been named the artist with the most nominations this year with four—Artist of the Year, Best Collaborative Video, and two nominations for Best Latin Video. The other female artist with multiple nominations is competitor Taylor Swift with an impressive eight.
The MTV Video Music Awards will take place on September 12th, celebrating the biggest music videos of the year. There’s no doubt that this ceremony will be unlike anything we have seen before. With the absence of male artists in the two biggest categories, and a nomination list that celebrates female talent, the show is guaranteed to be an inspiring and empowering event.
