Vergil Ortiz, the Chicano boxer from Texas, and promising contender for junior middleweight championships, has returned to the scene with a 1st round KO stoppage over Fredrick Lawson. Unfortunately, many in the crowd booed the seemingly early stoppage from Tony Weeks.
In Weeks’ defense, the veteran referee noted that he saw Lawson’s eyes roll back. I also think he may have observed 7 powerful unanswered shots from Vergil Ortiz Jr. that went unanswered by Fredrick Lawson. With the many recent comas and hospitalizations associated with boxing, Weeks may simply be heeding the call for fighter safety.
Ortiz himself has fainted making weight, struggling to sweat down to 147 welterweight division levels. This led to him cancelling multiple intriguing fights for a WBA regular welterweight title, but after 17 months, he finds himself competing one division above that weight limit. This could be the more powerful version of Ortiz yet since in the short 2 minutes that the fight lasted, we could observe powerful jabs and body shots. No word yet on who his next potential opponent could be, but fans were certainly peeved that they could not see more of him.
