Kansas City was dressed in red and gold to celebrate the Chiefs’ historic Super Bowl victory, but the joy turned to sadness when a shooting erupted during the parade, leaving one person dead and 21 injured, including 9 children. The victim was identified as Lisa Lopez Galvan, a 40-year-old Mexican mother of two.

Known by her stage name “Lisa G,” Lopez Galvan was a huge Chiefs fan and a beloved person in the Hispanic community. She was a radio host at community station KKFI and A Taste of Tejano, a station that celebrated Hispanic music and culture. Family members confirmed that she died in surgery from a bullet to the abdomen. One of her sons was also injured in the incident.

For Lopez Galvan’s family and friends, the Super Bowl parade was supposed to be a joyous celebration, but ended in tragedy. In the wake of this senseless act of violence, the community is faced with feelings of sadness and fear. Many are calling for an end to gun violence and stricter laws to prevent these tragedies from happening again.

What does the government plan to do?

President Biden has called on Congress to take concrete steps to address the issue of gun violence in the country. This includes a ban on assault weapons, restrictions on high-capacity magazines, stricter background checks, and measures to prevent unfit individuals from having access to firearms.

The use of assault weapons in shootings has been a recurring theme in the history of the country and their devastating effect has been more than demonstrated. However, their purchase and possession is still legal in several states, backed by the second amendment to the Constitution.

While the Super Bowl is a time for celebration and unity, the events in Kansas City serve as a grim reminder of the lingering crisis of gun violence in America. As President Biden said, “We know what we need to do, we just need the courage to do it.”
