Petro Wins Colombian Presidential Election

With Shift To Left, Colombia’s No Longer The US’ Backyard

Gustavo Petro, the former M-19 guerilla member, has now taken Colombia’s top government post as he was elected resoundingly to the presidency today June 19, 2022. Father’s day was postponed to next week to allow for the vote to proceed on this usual holiday date.

Petro was able to win at the polls decisively with 3 percentage points more than Rodolfo Hernandez. At 50.4 to 47.3 percent difference.

Gustavo Petro, president-elect of Colombia

Origins of Petro

Petro is a former M-19 student activist whose guerilla connection coloured his first several decades of political activity. His first post was in Zipaquira, Colombia, a small town north of Bogota where Petro mostly handled media and political matters for the M-19 group. Petro, whose background is upper middle class, also began his official political career simultaneously as a city councilmen of Zipaquira.

Petro has tried several times to reach this post. His last attempt was in the 2018 elections when he lost to Iván Duque, a hard right candidate sponsored by former president Alvaro Uribe. At the time, a still nascent left wing groundswell in Colombia. Unfortunately, in that time period, the right wing of Colombia was able to dial back a series of terms in the peace accords negotiated with the FARC. Like today, there was also constant talk of Duque’s connections with paramilitary forces. If anything, Petro’s ascent is a firm closing of the violent chapter in the country’s dealings with activist groups.

Political Gaffes

Curiously, while marking himself as a man of the people, there have been episodes or bundled public signaling that shows Petro’s less than humble origins. For instance, Petro’s ironic affinity for luxury goods, connections to the upper echelon of entrenched Bogota based businesses and general lack of competence in administrative matters while mayor of Bogota.

US Intervention

The election of Petro is unlikely to sit well with Washington D.C. Traditionally, Colombia has done for Latin America what Israel has done to the Middle East: destabilize it in favor of US interests.

The election of Petro places Colombia in a different political orientation. The usage of Colombia as both a political and geographical tool to pressure Venezuela, for instance. There is also a potential control and influence of Colombian oil that Petro can wield in a manner that makes Venezuelan crude that much more valuable. This is just in the midst of Washington’s full court press against Russia.

Petro Wins – Third Time’s The Charm

Still, the general trajectory of his leftist ideals is enough to seize the moment for Colombia. The opposition was far beleaguered to do much too. Leaked audios that showcased alternative candidates as blatantly corrupt.

Equal Respect: Mexico Outlines Stance Regarding Russia, Ukraine, United States and China

In a recent press conference, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) declined to criticize Russian President, Vladimir Putin, who has been mostly condemned in the English-speaking western world. Instead, AMLO noted that the state of Mexico respects China, Russia and the United States equally.

This may, however, prove as something below standard for the western press whose usual position is one of expecting absolute dominance of neighbors.

In recent official communications between the US and Mexico, US officials have expressed surprise at Mexico refusing to expel Russian officials from Mexican territory. They also noted that Russia has the most spies of any foreign country. They do so likely as a trampoline to the US, but Mexican officials have quickly countered with the following question: how does the US gather this intelligence and how many US spies do they have in Mexican territory?

Through its popular and elected president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Mexico also reiterated the need to be neutral.

“Mexico does not seek to a protagonist in this conflict.”

Expressing feelings strongly as if an agentive entity within the Russia-Ukraine/NATO conflict would escalate its overall commitment.

Alexis Rocha Fight: Rocha Targets ‘Blair The Flair’ To Breakthrough

Following the unexpected hospitalization of Vergil Ortiz Jr., a new headline event is set for this Saturday, March 19, 2022 to replace his bout with undefeated UK welterweight Michael McKinson. The co-main event is now the headliner: Blair Cobbs vs Alexis Rocha is set to be a fan-friendly replacement.

Alexis ‘Lex’ Rocha, a promising welterweight contender, from Santa Ana, California, is a technically sound southpaw who has sparred with the likes of Manny Pacquiao and Josh Taylor. Over the past few fights, one can tell that the intricacies of sparring with greats has developed Rocha as a fighter. This leads most fans to favor Rocha against Cobbs’ wild, but dangerous, style, as a poll from Boxing enthusiast @SpicyMami_ shows:

Blair Cobbs is no slouch. Cobbs is trained by the great Freddy Roach and has serious knockout power. However, Cobbs and Rocha share opponents with both receiving victories over them. Cobbs – to his credit – was able to knockout a difficult Brad Solomon whose styling gave Rocha’s more aggressive counter-punching style problems.

Still, given Rocha’s constant activity, we do feel that at some level the momentum is on the side of the comparatively younger fighter. He’s a tough contender that may be underestimated. Rumors abound that this fight has been brewing since November. Rocha alleged that the fight was rejected by the Blair Cobbs camp.

Rocha is a rising prospect whose sole defeat is to a fleet footed boxer stylist in a competitive fight. Since his loss to Rasheed ‘Speedy’ Ellis, Rocha has pushed forward and grabbed some intense knockouts against other top level contenders. A rematch with Ellis should Rocha get past Cobbs is also an interesting fight.

Stylistic Match-Up

Cobbs throws wild shots at times. He has been dropped in the past. His power is obvious. Cobbs is also quite the talker as can be seen on the video interview from Golden Boy’s promotional materials.

For his part, Rocha is regarded as technically sound. The high-guard defense means that he will not be caught by basic combinations. His only weakness is with boxers that have a lot of lateral movement. Cobbs presents none of this boxing styling. Perhaps, he could get caught with something wild, but then his conditioning is second to none.

US/Pentagon Continue To Shy Away From ‘No-Fly Zone’ Thankfully

As if the world needed additional turmoil, the Ukrainian government continues to demand that sponsor states create a new ‘Fly-Zone’:

Asked about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s repeated calls on Western powers to take control of his country’s airspace to repel a Russian attack, Austin said the Joe Biden administration would not grant the request, citing the risk of escalation

Fortunately, the American government continues to balk at the possibility stating that the obvious fallout is a potential escalation of the conflict with a foreign power that has not threatened NATO members.
