The long-awaited fight between Mexican superstar Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and rising contender Jermall Charlo could soon become a reality. Both sides, including the promoter Al Haymon, have met to attempt to bring the match to fruition, especially after Canelo’s successful fight against John Ryder in May of this year.
The match-up has prompted criticism for potentially being an “easy fight,” given that Jermall Charlo has not fought in two years. His last fight was on June 19, 2021 against Juan Macías Montiel, which he won by unanimous decision. Furthermore, in the 32 fights he has had, he has won 22 of them via knock-out.
Although it is not certain whether the Canelo Álvarez-Jermall Charlo match will happen in September, the Mexican could have something to prove with such a fight: that he is unafraid of taking on opponents from any realm. He has recently been accused of choosing rivals with less experience and in less-than-ideal form.
The bout could be a true test for both fighters and, if nothing else, has the potential to make Canelo-Charlo the night of the year. With Canelo’s recent successes as well as Charlo’s possible drive to prove himself after not competing in two years, both fighters and their respective teams have much at stake with a potential match-up.
Regardless, the result of the fight will prove to be an interesting one, and Canelo Alvarez will be facing off in a slightly controversial match-up with Jermall Charlo come September.
