Colombia was shocked this week by the news that Colonel Óscar Dávila committed suicide. This came following an alleged wiretapping scandal involving Marelbys Meza, the nanny of the former chief of staff of the Colombian Government, Laura Sarabia.
The autopsy and subsequent investigation by the Colombian Attorney General’s Office concluded that it was indeed suicide, and revealed that Dávila had shot himself in the right hand. The scandal further led to the departure of Armando Benedetti, Colombian ambassador to Venezuela, from the Government of Gustavo Petro.
Many in Colombia mourn the loss of Dávila and are calling for further investigations into the wiretapping scandal. Others feel that the Colonel’s death is not only a tragedy in itself, but also a grim reminder of the political corruption and violence that persists in Colombia.
It is clear that the case has put a spotlight on the deeply rooted political problems in the country, and will require answers in order to bring justice and closure to those affected. It will likely have widespread repercussions as Colombia seeks to initiate reforms and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
