The city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is mired in an increasingly complex and dangerous crisis following the escape of more than 4,500 inmates from the country’s largest prison. Amid the lack of control and violence unleashed by various gangs vying for power in the city, one figure has emerged as one of the most worrying: Jimmy Chérizier, also known as “Barbecue” leader of a gang of cannibals.

This leader, at the head of the powerful criminal organization known as the G9 Family, has become a figure of fear for his brutality and his role in the ongoing violence. In addition, his notoriety is due to disturbing videos on social media in which he is seen eating human flesh. Not only that, but he is also linked to crimes such as the 2018 Saline massacre, in which 71 people were killed.

Meanwhile, the international community is closely following the situation in Haiti. The fact that the prime minister, Ariel Henry, has left the country has generated even more uncertainty and concern. The United States, France and Canada attended a meeting convened by the Caribbean Community in Jamaica on March 11 to address the crisis.

With Chérizier in a position of power, there are fears that the country could descend into civil war. Haiti’s future remains uncertain amidst the turbulence and violence in which it is mired. Faced with this critical situation, the international community is called upon to act and find a solution to restore stability and security in this Caribbean country.
