A tragic accident involving a military aircraft of the Italian Air Force has led to the death of a five-year-old girl near the northern city of Turin.
The accident occurred on Saturday during an aerial patrol exercise of the “Frecce Tricolori” aerobatic patrol, which was taking off from Turin’s Caselle Airport for an air show commemorating the centenary of the Italian Air Force. The aircraft reportedly suffered an engine failure, according to the Italian press, and the pilot ejected with a parachute seconds before the crash.
The aircraft hit the car occupied by the minor’s family, overturning the vehicle and killing the child. The girl’s parents and nine-year-old brother were taken to the hospital with burns.
Italian Air Force officials released a statement expressing their “deep sadness” after the accident. Commander in Chief of the Italian Air Force, Enrico Sardone, said: “We express our cuddle and deep sadness for the little girl and all the injured people, as well as our closeness to their families”.
The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
