SAN PEDRO GARZA GARCÍA, Mexico – Tragedy struck Wednesday night when nine people were killed and more than 60 injured when a stage collapsed during a political event.
The event was organized by Lorena Canavati, Movimiento Ciudadano’s candidate for mayor of San Pedro, and was intended to be a conventional closing of her campaign. However, the festivities quickly turned disastrous when a strong wind caused the stage structure to collapse and fall on top of the attendees, causing panic among the crowd.
Among the victims were event attendees, including a minor child, as well as politicians who were on stage at the time of the collapse.
As news of the incident spread, Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia confirmed the tragic deaths and injuries. He urged residents to stay indoors as severe thunderstorms continued to batter the area.
In light of the incident, many have questioned the decision to hold such an event during a time of severe weather alert. However, Canavati has since spoken out to take responsibility and offer support to those affected and their families.
“There are no words to describe the pain and sadness caused by the terrible accident that happened today at our campaign event, caused by a strong gust of wind. At this moment all I can think of is those affected and their families.
My team and I are already coordinating with the authorities to give them all the attention and support. They are the most important thing”
The incident has caused widespread grief and shock throughout the community of San Pedro, as well as throughout the country of Mexico. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of staging major events during unpredictable weather conditions.
