The death of American ice hockey player Adam Johnson has left the sport in shock and mourning. Johnson, a 29-year-old forward for the Nottingham Panthers, suffered a fatal injury during a game against the Sheffield Steelers in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) Challenge Cup on Saturday night.
The incident occurred during the Challenge Cup game, when a Sheffield Steelers player hit Adam with his skate, cutting his neck. Johnson immediately fell to the ice, his hands covering his face as blood spilled around him. He was immediately rushed to hospital but despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Johnson died.
The Sheffield Arena quickly announced over the public address system the suspension of the match, and the players, along with the crowd, were ejected from the stadium.
His parent club, the Nottingham Panthers, issued a statement expressing their shock at the tragic loss and described Johnson as not only an exceptional player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person. They added that the club will never forget him.
The EIHL has also shown their support by postponing Sunday’s games in honor of Johnson. As news of Adam Johnson’s death spreads, tributes and condolences are pouring in from players, teams and fans, all mourning the tragic loss of a young athlete.
