An act of violence echoed through the streets of Taxco, Guerrero, on Thursday when a girl as young as 8 years old was kidnapped and murdered in Taxco, Guerrero. Little Camila Gomez Ortega left her home with the illusion of spending the afternoon with her best friend, but never returned. Desperate to find her, her family began receiving calls demanding 250,000 Mexican pesos ($15,000 USD) for her release. However, all hope was dashed when the girl’s body was found on a highway Thursday morning.

The events took place on Wednesday afternoon, when Camila left her home to visit her neighbor and best friend. As the hours passed, her mother began to worry when she did not see her return and decided to call her friend’s house, but the woman who answered told her that Camila had never arrived there. Filled with anguish, the mother sought help from her neighbors and it was then that one of them showed her a video in which the girl was seen arriving at her friend’s house.

The investigation pointed to Camila’s friend’s neighbor, identified as Ana Rosa Díaz Aguilar, and her two children as the main suspects in the crime. In one of the security camera videos that were leaked on social networks, it can be seen how Ana Rosa is carrying a basket of clothes and behind her is a man carrying a garbage bag on his shoulders. Both people left the scene in a car.

The community was outraged and demanded justice for the innocent victim. But when the police failed to take action, the mob turned violent and took justice into their own hands, dragging the suspects out of their home, beating and torturing them through the streets of the La Florida neighborhood.

Despite the efforts of the authorities, who finally intervened and removed two of the accused from the mob, it was too late for Ana Rosa Diaz Aguilar who was beaten by the community and died from the brutal beating.
