Renowned urban artist Jesus Kobe has left his mark on the new sports building in Oaxaca with a striking mural depicting the glorious history of sports in the region. In a city where sports are an important part of the culture, the Kobe mural has become a prominent symbol of the union between sports and the wrestling history that accompanies the place.
The Oaxaca teachers union fought tirelessly to recover the space where the building currently stands, facing numerous political obstacles. The Kobe mural serves as a tribute to that struggle and the building’s importance as a place where physical education and sports are encouraged in the city.
The mural, which on one side features Athena with olive wreaths and on the other a Mayan soccer player, seeks to portray the history of sports in the region. Kobe explains that before being considered entertainment, sport in Mesoamerica had an important function as a means of resolving conflicts, making judgments, and distributing land. Likewise, the artist highlighted the diversity of ball games that existed in the region, with the Mayan being the most recognized for its characteristic hoop and the Zapotecs having a similar version at different times.
The mural was made at the state sports directorate of the city’s sports schools. Kobe highlighted the importance of Oaxaca as a city with a great sports culture and urged people to see sports in a universal way, to see it beyond just entertainment, emphasizing that sports were previously used for survival, like hunting.
Ultimately, the Jesus Kobe mural is not only a visually striking work of art, but also a celebration of the history and importance of sports in the culture and society of the region. Without a doubt, it has become an attraction for locals and tourists, and a powerful representation of the union between wrestling and sports in Oaxaca.
