Residents of Delray Beach, a normally quiet and peaceful beach town in South Florida, were shocked when the dismembered body of his 80-year-old wife, Aydil Barbosa Fontes, was discovered and linked to her murder. An investigation was first opened on July 21st, 2023.
According to Lead Detective Mike Liberta, “detectives conducted neighborhood canvases and developed multiple witnesses who were able to give information about a vehicle and individual seen in the area several times prior to the suitcases being located. “Video surveillance was collected from multiple sources and detectives were able to confirm the statements made by these witnesses,” Liberta said. Liberta added, “a vehicle tag was obtained which led us to a subject that lived in the immediate vicinity where the suitcases were located.” Police followed up on this information, leading to the arrest of Lowe Jr. near his home. “
Her remains were found in several suitcases along the Intracoastal Waterway. The remains were placed inside suitcases tied to landscaping rocks and with a LATAM Airlines barcode label.
In late July, Delray Beach Police Department arrested 78-year-old William Lowe. Local prosecutors charged him with the first-degree murder of his wife. Inside the couple’s apartment, police noticed large amounts of blood in the bathtub and shower drain, tools that could have been used for dismemberment, and marks on the walls.
Local police were able to trace the gruesome discovery back to the night of July 21 when witnesses reported seeing a man, fitting Lowe’s description, near the suitcases. The Delray Beach Police Department found a total of 3 suitcases containing Barbosa Fontes’ remains.
Forensic tests indicated that Fontes’ death was caused by a gunshot wound to the head and her identity was established after a forensic examination of her teeth. Lowe pleaded not guilty in court and is currently being held without bail.
