The Vatican Approves Blessing of Homosexual Couples, But Maintains Ban on Same-Sex Marriage

In a historic gesture, Pope Francis has taken a momentous step towards the inclusion of the LGTBI community in the Catholic Church by authorizing the blessing of same-sex couples. This change of course, which will surely not be well received by the most conservative sectors, is a message of love and openness towards all people, without distinction of sexual orientation.

Specifically, the Vatican has issued a document through the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith that endorses these blessings as an act of “pastoral proximity” towards couples “in irregular situations” and towards same-sex couples. This declaration, of great doctrinal importance, is the first to be published in more than two decades and marks a radical change in the Church’s position on this issue.

Until now, the Doctrine of Faith had prevented priests from blessing same-sex couples, arguing that “God cannot bless sin.” However, Pope Francis has decided to ignore this position and take a step towards inclusion and unconditional love, as he has promoted throughout his pontificate.

This decision cannot be ignored as a significant step towards inclusivity and acceptance within the Catholic community. It follows the historic move by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith last month, which allowed for the baptism of children of same-sex couples and individuals who identify as transgender.

It is important to note that this blessing does not replace the sacrament of marriage in the Catholic Church or change the position of the Church on same -sex marriage.

The emphasis of the Pope in love, mercy and acceptance has established a new tone for the Catholic Church, challenging traditional points of view and generating hope for a more inclusive community.
