The city of Chicago is no stranger to cold weather, but recent extreme temperatures have caused major problems throughout the city. With sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall, Chicago has been forced to take extreme measures to keep everything running smoothly.
One of the biggest challenges has been maintaining a safe and efficient rail system. Snow and ice on the tracks have caused numerous delays and mechanical problems, leaving commuters frustrated and stranded.
In response to this problem, Chicago officials have resorted to a unique solution: setting the train tracks on fire. This may seem counterintuitive, but the controlled fires have helped raise the temperature of the tracks and thaw them, allowing trains to continue their route without further problems.
As the city battles this extreme cold front, other parts of the country are also feeling its effects. The National Weather Service has issued alerts for more than 100 million residents in 25 states, warning of dangerously cold temperatures and another possible winter storm on the way.
The city of Chicago has also experienced what is known as “sea smoke,” a type of fog that forms when cold air moves over warmer waters. Lake Michigan has now become an impressive sight, with large portions of its surface completely frozen over.
As extreme cold continues to plague Chicago and despite the challenges, Chicagoans are resilient and know how to adapt to the harsh winter conditions.
