Colombia Exports More Than 700 Million Flowers for Valentine’s Day

Colombia, known for its rich culture and delicious coffee, is also a country that excels in the floral industry. Its position as the largest flower producer in the Americas makes it a leading figure in the export market for Valentine’s Day, with more than 700 million stems shipped this year. The celebration of this romantic date is a great opportunity for the Colombian floral industry, representing 15% of its annual exports and generating close to 27,000 additional jobs, mainly occupied by female heads of household, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

With a wide variety of flowers, including the most popular roses, carnations and chrysanthemums, Colombia has positioned itself as the world’s second largest supplier of flowers, only after the Netherlands. This is no surprise, given that the country has more than 60 species and 1,600 varieties of flowers, all certified for export. This dedication to quality and the constant search for scientific development are some of the reasons for the success of the Colombian flower industry.

In preparation for the hustle and bustle of Valentine’s Day, Colombia’s flower exports are experiencing a significant increase in logistical efforts, with three times as many daily flights to transport flowers to different destinations. The United States is the main market for Colombian flowers, followed by Japan, the Netherlands and other countries in Europe and Asia. From January to October last year, the country’s flower exports totaled US$1.75 billion, demonstrating its important role in the industry worldwide.

With its beautiful flowers and dedicated workforce, Colombia has proven to be a major player in the flower market, bringing beauty and love to people around the world on special occasions. As the country continues to thrive in this industry, it is sure to leave a lasting impression on both buyers and recipients of its flowers.
