Tragedy struck a Bronx daycare center on Friday afternoon as 1-year-old Nicholas Dominici died after being exposed to fentanyl. Carlisto Acevedo Brito, 41, and Grei Mendez, 36, have been arrested and charged with various charges, creating an uproar among the community.

According to the New York City Police Department, the 911 call came in at 2:40 p.m. with Nicholas being found already unconscious. He was quickly rushed to the hospital, however, he was pronounced dead shortly after. In addition to this, three other minors were found unconscious and were hospitalized. A 2-year-old boy and an 8-month old girl were taken to the Montefiore Medical Center, the boy being in critical condition and the girl being stable, and a 2-year-old boy being taken to the BronxCare Health System and is also in stable condition. All three minors have been treated with Narcan, a commonly used opioid antidote.

The New York medical examiner’s office is still investigating the cause and manner of death. Following a search warrant being executed, it was revealed that a press commonly used by drug dealers to package large quantities of drugs was found at the daycare center. This situation has caused concern and has been labeled as “a real wake-up call” by Mayor Eric Adams for those who have opioids and fentanyl in their homes.

The daycare center had a license from the state of New York, and had two routine inspections prior to being licensed, with its most recent inspection being on September 9th of this year with no violations found.

The recent events of the daycare center have left many in the community heartbroken and have triggered an investigation into the center. Tragedy has, unfortunately, struck again in the Bronx.
