The popularity of Colombian President Gustavo Petro is fading as a new survey reveals growing public disapproval of his leadership.
According to Opinómetro and La W, who conducted the survey between August 17 and 18, President Petro’s disapproval reached a new high of 62%, up from 57% over the course of the previous seven days. At the same time, his approval dropped from 35% to 32%.
The increase in public dissatisfaction with the president is attributed to a number of recent scandals related to his presidential campaign, poor results in the ‘Total Peace’ initiative and economic uncertainty. Unsurprisingly, Petro fared worse in the regions where he won the June 2022 elections; in the Pacific region his disapproval rating reached 54%, and in Bogota which historically has been a stronghold of the left and independent sectors 61% of those surveyed disapproved of the president’s performance.
President Petro’s waning popularity is undoubtedly cause for concern, and it remains to be seen whether the Colombian leader can turn his fortunes around.
