Tszyu was able to fight off a challenge from a formidable Brian Mendoza yesterday in Australia. Very few jabs were thrown in this competitive fight which involved more timing, closing distance with basic footwork and powerful, well-timed shots. The victory leaves the door very wide open for a Jermell Charlo showdown either in Australia or the US. Tim’s lead left hook was a sight to behold.
Tszyu maintains himself undefeated but was able to do so respectfully since Mendoza had upset multiple high ranked super welterweight contenders prior to their engagement.
Tszyu was able to grind out a difficult first half of the fight against Brian Mendoza. Mendoza was able to throw to the head and body even if the first shot was usually blocked by Tim but landing to the body. For his part, Tim would exhibit great waist movement, but limited head movement to avoid and deflect the shots. A straight right from Mendoza would pierce his high guard occasionally. A more confident straight right hand shot from Jermell Charlo may do greater damage, so that’s definitely something for him to look out in a potential match.
There was no knockdown in the match, likely because both fighters were in extremely good shape. Mendoza was able to power through 3 impressive uppercuts from Tim. Nonetheless, Mendoza was not the victor despite a courageous showing. We always felt conditioning was important to both:
