GUATAPÉ, COLOMBIA – November 2, what was supposed to be a breathtaking experience quickly turned into a nightmare for 15 tourists visiting the popular Piedra del Peñol in Guatapé, Colombia. The small town, known for its colorful houses and breathtaking scenery, was rocked by a landslide on the famous rock, leaving 15 people injured.
La Piedra del Peñol has long been a popular tourist attraction. It offers visitors a 702-step climb to the top, rewarding them with breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. The exact cause of the landslide is currently under investigation, but early reports suggest that it may have been due to a natural weathering process, which is the decomposition of rock caused by rainfall and water infiltration.
The Administrative Department of Risk Management of Antioquia, Dagran, reported that the Municipal Risk Management Council of Guatapé reported the detachment of material at the top of the rock. Nine of the injured tourists were taken to the hospital, while six others were treated at the site.
The director of Dagran, Jaime Enrique Gómez Zapata, explained that a commission has been sent to the site to evaluate and report on the incident. While the investigation continues and the authorities work to ensure the safety of the area, the Piedra del Peñol will remain closed to the public.
