Barranquilla Protests Mount Over Murder of Jack Ramirez, Engineering Student

Car is recovered, but no sign of criminals

The murder of an engineering student has rocked Barranquilla’s community. Protests, media denunciations and grief have colored the past week after the shooting death of Jack Ramirez. Pointlessly, three thieves stole the car, as is common in Barranquilla, only to have the vehicle, a Mazda 2, recovered a few days later. There remains a 50-million-peso bounty on the 3 thieves.

Social Context

Corruption, ineptitude and nepotism has plagued the city of Barranquilla with social ills, including high crime rates and lack of basic services such as proper drainage in the rainy seasons. Despite its unique tourism attractions and important cultural background, the city seems destined to drag these problems well into the future.

Ramirez’ family chose to protest against the tragedy and railed against the insecurity that has afflicted Barranquilla. His girlfriend, Natalia Ahumada, who witnessed the act of violence against the young man, pleaded with the public and mentioned Jack’s excellent character.

Much of the protest has been covered by the independent radio stations. The memorial for Jack took place in the very place that the death of Jack occurred in calle 76 with Carrera 35 C. Justicia:
