Since the release of the footage, protests have erupted in Memphis and beyond, with demonstrators demanding justice for Nichols and an end to police brutality.
The brutal killing of a Tyre Nichols by 5 officers has rocked the United States and raised questions about the use of force by law enforcement. All five officers are African American as was Tyre Nichols.
The Nichols case is just the latest in a long line of high-profile incidents of police brutality in the U.S. In November, a white police officer in Chicago was charged with first-degree murder for shooting a black teenager 16 times. In May, a white police officer in Texas was fired after he was caught on video beating a black woman during a traffic stop. And these are just the most recent examples.
According to the website Killed by Police, at least 1,209 people have been killed by police in the U.S. in 2019. That’s an average of more than three people killed by police every day. The brutal killing of a man by Memphis Police officers has rocked the United States. 2023 kicks off in much the same tone as 2021.
