On Saturday, Hamas launched a surprise attack in a disputed settlement that encroaches upon historically agreed upon borders between Palestine and Israel. Civilians, women and children were openly targeted as militants parachuted into music festivals, residential areas and other soft targets in the region. While this took place, tourists were caught in the crossfire as most visitors are unaware of the political inner workings of any country they visit.
Like many tourists and locals, Ivonne Rubio(@ivonne_rubio24), whose Instagram remains active for well wishers, and her boyfriend, Antonio, were attending ‘Tribe of Nova’, an open-air festival at the edge of a controversial Israeli settlement bordering Gaza. Rubio’s body was identified by Israeli security services in the aftermath among 260 individuals killed in the scene. The tragedy was compounded with Antonio’s likely kidnapping by Hamas.
Ivonne Rubio, the girlfriend of Antonio Macias Montaño, was initially thought to be only kidnapped, but later confirmed murdered in the stampede organized by Hamas. As we combed through her social media account, we could confirm that Rubio had settled out in Israel for some time and was a mother of two young children.
Antonio remains disappeared, but family members maintain hope that he will be found. A family friend confirmed the death to Caracol Radio in Colombia.
