In recent years, medical tourism has attracted many Americans to Mexico in search of cheap medical services. However, a recent incident in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, shows the dangerous reality of this type of travel.
The four U.S. citizens traveling to the Mexican border city for cosmetic surgery were kidnapped over the weekend. Two of them have been found dead and the other two have been repatriated to their country, one of them injured.
This tragedy reveals the need for Americans to understand the risks involved in medical tourism. Border cities such as Matamoros are among the most dangerous in Mexico, where drug cartels have control over large regions of the state of Tamaulipas.
Medical tourism to Mexico may be an attractive option for some, but it is important for Americans to be aware of the risks of traveling to places where violence and crime are pervasive. Travelers should be aware of their surroundings and heed the recommendations of local, state and federal authorities regarding travel to Mexico.
