Chile is shocked by the tragic death of former president Sebastián Piñera (74) in a helicopter crash this afternoon, February 6. Piñera, who was president for two non-consecutive terms, was traveling with his family in his private helicopter when it crashed into Lake Ranco, in the south of the country.
Initial reports from the scene indicate that three passengers were able to escape from the aircraft before it crashed and plunged into the lake. Rescue teams are currently working to recover Piñera’s body, which is believed to be 40 meters below the lake’s surface. The exact causes of the accident are still unknown and official confirmation of the former president’s death is awaited.
The investigation into the helicopter crash is ongoing and is a developing story.
