On Sunday, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of Guatemala has finalized its results from the June 25th General Elections, confirming the 160 congressmen that will make up the country’s legislative Parliament beginning in January 2024.

The Vamos political coalition, led by current President Alejandro Giammattei – will be the majority force in the Guatemalan Parliament, having won 39 of the 160 congressional seats. National Unity of Hope (UNE) of presidential challenger Sandra Torres, came in second place, with 28 seats, while the progressive-socialist Movimiento Semilla party came in third with 23 seats. Cabal and Visión con Valores followed with 18 and 11 seats, respectively.

The chaotic run-up to the election led to six municipalities re-running their elections due to either violence or court intervention. Last Wednesday, 50 minutes before the second round of elections between Torres and Arévalo was announced, Prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche suspended the legal status of Movimiento Semillas party In response, the United States sanctioned Curruchiche for allegedly hampering attempts to combat corruption and affecting the nation’s democratic integrity.

The confirmation of the election results follows three weeks after the June 25th polls, where the country saw a 40% rate of abstentionism – making these elections one of the lowest turnouts in the country’s recent history. Torres beat out Arévalo de León of the progressive-socialist Seed movement to lead in the first round of presidential voting. The two will now face off in a second round of elections on August 20th.
