The new action-drama “Sound of Freedom” is a powerful indictment of human trafficking and child exploitation. Starring Jim Caviezel as an agent who quits his job to pursue traffickers of child sex, the film’s powerful narrative draws from the real-life story of an Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.) raid in Colombia, which resulted in the rescue of 123 victims of trafficking, including 55 minors.
The film paints an impartial picture of the entertainment and production industry’s reluctance to support the film due to its dark subject matter, as well as the struggles of the real-life Tim Ballard in rescuing children from abuse. However, some have criticized the movie for failing to highlight some of the more common realities of human trafficking, in particular, that many victims are trafficked by family members or acquaintances, rather than powerful criminal networks.
Despite its flaws, “Sound of Freedom” has become a box office hit, taking in nearly $100 million since its release. Caviezel commented on the movie’s potential to change the world, saying that it “can legitimately change this world”. He hopes it can help to shed light on the insidious issue of trafficking and exploitation and encourage viewers to take action.
Regardless of any criticisms, “Sound of Freedom” has served as a powerful platform to bring the realities of human trafficking and child exploitation to the attention of the wider public. In doing so, it is helping to spark a much-needed conversation on the subject and is inspiring people to take action
