In a decision that could have far-reaching implications for the relationship between corporations and state governments, a U.S. judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by Disney against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, accusing him of seeking political “revenge.”

The dispute between DeSantis and Disney began in 2022 when Disney criticized a state law that prohibits the teaching of topics related to sexual orientation and gender in schools. Because of that, the governor decided to take control of the special district that Disney had been running since the 1960s as a local government, prompting Disney to file a lawsuit.

However, federal Judge Allen Winsor dismissed the lawsuit, stating that Disney lacked a legal “basis” to take the governor to court. Disney’s lawsuit claimed that DeSantis’ actions jeopardized its economic future in Florida, where it employs more than 75,000 people.

DeSantis has yet to comment on the dismissal of Disney’s lawsuit, but the ruling is considered a victory for his administration. The decision has been met with disappointment from Disney, which has vowed to continue fighting in court. A spokesperson for the company stated, “This is an important case with serious implications for the rule of law and it will not end here.”

As the case continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this decision will affect the relationship between corporations and state governments in the future. For now, Disney’s lawsuit against the governor of Florida has come to an unexpected end, leaving both sides grappling with its implications.
