In a recent press conference, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) declined to criticize Russian President, Vladimir Putin, who has been mostly condemned in the English-speaking western world. Instead, AMLO noted that the state of Mexico respects China, Russia and the United States equally.

This may, however, prove as something below standard for the western press whose usual position is one of expecting absolute dominance of neighbors.
In recent official communications between the US and Mexico, US officials have expressed surprise at Mexico refusing to expel Russian officials from Mexican territory. They also noted that Russia has the most spies of any foreign country. They do so likely as a trampoline to the US, but Mexican officials have quickly countered with the following question: how does the US gather this intelligence and how many US spies do they have in Mexican territory?
Through its popular and elected president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Mexico also reiterated the need to be neutral.
