ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can be used to both assist and hinder people. Cybersecurity experts are concerned that criminals are beginning to use this technology to their advantage, as it can aid in phishing and other malicious activities.
In a recent survey from Blackberry, 74% of IT professionals expressed concern about ChatGPT being used for nefarious purposes.
Cybercriminals are now using the open source models of ChatGPT, which have different content restrictions than those of the web user interface. However, ChatGPT is currently not sophisticated enough to aid in creating malware, although this could be a possibility in the future.
It is not yet clear if companies like OpenAI will be held responsible for these crimes, but experts like former federal prosecutor Edward McAndrew are hoping that governments will take on the responsibility of regulating such activities, setting parameters of AI and tech companies, and international coalitions and norms will need to be established to regulate it.
